I think this must be the tenth time we have seen Cara. The Minack is the perfect venue although this is definitely weather dependant. Having last seen her with Sam at Calstock Arts Centre where she performed a couple of her poems from the ‘Coming home’ book and album and sang a selection of tracks from previous albums, we left happy and contented. However this performance, I am sorry to say left us far from satisfied. Cara was accompanied, as usual by Sam and additionally a trio of musicians namely bassist, cellist and an excellent multi instrumentalist on guitars, fiddle and flute. Hampered by the weather Cara spent perhaps as much time explaining the relevance of her poetry as reciting them. Songs, from previous albums were few and far between with Black is the colour and The Parting Glass being highlights. Rain showers continued to interupt the flow of the set and a last minute decision to erect a gazebo over the band was an inspired move. I assume that The Minack has a definitive cut off point as after the perhaps very apt Parting Glass the band left the stage with a wave and no encore was offered. I cast my mind back to a London gig where Cara was accompanied by a full traditional band pipes and all with the excellent John Smith performing a duet with Cara on “If I prove false” . Such a brilliant concert. Perhaps a return to those days would please us long supporting fans.

Excellent! First (and sadly last) time we’ve seen Show of Hands. Although it was the 73rd of 75 dates on this final tour, the accomplished performances from Steve & Phil along with the amusing anecdotes made it feel like it was the first gig. As for the stunning Minack Theatre, it was our first time there too, however, we WILL be back there again! What an incredible venue, which was extremely well organised by very friendly staff. A brilliant night all round. Pete & Dawn Plymouth
