To be honest I wasn't overwhelmed by this show, which is probably more down to the venue rather than the artist. The teatro real is obviously a cultural institution in Madrid but after having been to this show I do not think it is a great venue for this kind of concert. It seemed like I was miles away from the artist who was just sitting on his own on a massive stage, which makes it kind of difficult to create any sort of connection with the audience. My seats weren't exaclt cheap but I still had to stretch my neck to see anything at all...not great. Jose played a decent set and sound quality was excellent in my opinion. That said, all supporting instruments, beats, maybe even some backing vocals came from tape...I'd have preferred a acoustic show to this. In any case, I hope he comes back to Madrid sometime and plays in a smaller, more intimate venue.
An Astonishing Night with Gregory Porter at Teatro Real, Madrid
Last night, Gregory Porter delivered a truly unforgettable performance at the majestic Teatro Real in Madrid. From the very first note, his presence was magnetic—but as the concert progressed, he soared to even greater heights, culminating in a finale that left the audience in awe.
Each song was a masterclass in soul and jazz, brought to life not only by Porter's rich, velvety voice but also by the exceptional musicians who accompanied him. What stood out was the seamless synergy between Porter and his band. While each musician had the talent to shine as a solo jazz performer, they chose instead to blend harmoniously, creating a sound that was both cohesive and electrifying. Porter, ever the generous bandleader, gave each artist space to express their unique voice, allowing their individual brilliance to illuminate the stage.
The audience was captivated throughout—smiling, swaying, and fully immersed in the music. There was a palpable sense of joy and connection in the room, a shared experience that transcended words.
The setting of Teatro Real, with its elegant architecture and impeccable acoustics, provided the perfect backdrop. The lighting design added a warm, intimate glow that enhanced the emotional depth of the performance. For nearly two hours, time seemed to stand still as everyone was swept away by the magic of the evening.
A night to remember, and a testament to the power of live music at its finest.
Madrid last night. Big big thank you to the Gregory Porter Band. Very very very VERY good!! You get it all. Smooth caramel, punchy wine and potent blue cheese 😅 they're so strong together, individually dripping with competence and unlike some jazz, they get you in with them. It was like 100 mins of therapy, soul satisfaction... I had a lump in my throat at times, a tear in my eye, uncontrollable. Gregory is a pure leader, not just a singer ..and his message is pure and full of goodness. Double bass didn't stop smiling for the whole gig, drums had by brain neurons buzzing, Hammond just so so good, key/organ was in another place, sax brought me back to my jazz gigging days (it's been a while unfortunately)...but I went there, sound was excellent. Gregory, I wasn't sure he'd open up...but his voice wraps his arms around you, the range, the honesty, the depth, the slinky pace... so so gifted. I went for the voice but the band were collectively so on top of their game, so glad I made it. Thank you Gregory Porter sextet, I was properly whisked away 🙏
