About this concert
Seal Party: Did some good arise from the quarantine? Maybe. For session musicians Chris McGrew and Kevin Seal, formerly of GRIDDLE, found themselves with free reign of the studio. Not just any studio — San Francisco’s Wally’s HydeOut at Hyde Street Studios, aka the old Wally Heider Studios, where artists ranging from the Dead Kennedys to the Grateful Dead to Herbie Hancock recorded some of their most legendary sides.
This gift of time let them build a dream scenario. “Let’s bring our long-simmering songs to a boil, and invite our friends to add their spices.” Soon, world-class horn players, violinists, organists, and singers were arriving, squirting hand sanitizer onto their mitts, and throwing their best ideas into the mix.

Cornelius Boots
Cornelius’ love affair with reeds–and later, bamboo–began at age 9. With an alter-ego as a drummer, he brings a percussive, driving spirit to all of his Western woodwinding, most notably the bass clarinet. In 1997 he completed the first of three music degrees from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music (BM Classical Clarinet), in addition to an audio degree (BS Audio Recording). In 1999 he completed a MM in Jazz Studies and in 2012, a shihan (master) from his shakuhachi teacher Grandmaster Michael Chikuzen Gould.

Seal Party Biography
New album coming out June 2024! Chris McGrew & Kevin Seal began this experiment in San Francisco, in the surreal orange daylight of 2020. They found themselves with occasional access to a legendary studio: Wally’s HydeOut in Hyde Street Studios. Their friends were hungry for opportunities to play music. And they had been writing a large batch of new songs that drew on soul harmonies, baritone melodies, and rock syncopation.
With help from multi-instrumentalist Liam Wesley Craddock, they treated each opportunity to record as a chance to throw a party. Each song was a different lineup, depending on which friends could make it. Heavy-hitter jazz players from Chicago and New York joined in too — Chris Rob, Keyon Harrold, Isaiah Sharkey, Kenneth Whalum.
The full 16-track album arrived in late 2022. MMXXII is a true labor of love. In May and June of 2023, McGrew, Seal, & Craddock will bring this party across the central USA, joined by Spence Murray on bass and Mikey Kmiecik on guitar.
