Nature Loves Courage Biography
Nature Loves Courage is an electronic-funk band bending entire genres to their will. Their name is inspired by a quote from psychedelic philosopher Terence McKenna. NLC was born in 2019 three long-time friends and musical partners – McKenna Rowe (vocals, arrangements, keys), Jake Bergman (bass) and Garrett Smith (drums). When the pandemic hit, NLC collaborated remotely on their sound in an explosion of songwriting during quarantine. Guitarist Joe De Sa joined the band in 2021. In 2022, NLC released 12 songs, with a new EP slated for release September 2023.
NLC’s big sound blends Rowe’s penchant for ethereal synths, cinematic scoring and electronic/industrial/trip-hop grooves with Bergman’s funk-inspired bass and Smith’s anthemic rock drums.
Sonically NLC has been compared to Garbage, Blondie, Goldfrapp and St. Vincent. Vocally Rowe has drawn comparisons to Annie Lennox, Siouxie, Róisín Murphy and Kate Bush. Her lyrics explore the personal (relationships, anxiety) the global (social media, politics), and the magic/metaphysical.
