Sutton Foster at Arizona Musicfest - Monday, January 27, 2025
Broadway theatres are traditionally 'Dark' on Mondays with no performances. But Arizona Musicfest in Scottsdale Arizona was so lucky to have Sutton Foster grace its stage on Monday, January 27, 2025. The engaging 'girl next door’ Sutton gave an amazing performance mixing ballads from her Broadway musicals with comfortable conversation with the audience about the roles she has played and her seven-year-old daughter, Emily.
Accompanied by Michael Rafter on the piano, Sutton's performance can only be described as heartwarming and delightful. Her opening numbers 'Something Coming (Could Be! Who Knows?)' from West Side Story, 'Imagination' from Willie Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, and 'Slap That Bass (Zoom, Zoom Zoom)’ from "Crazy For You" set the stage for a magical adventure with songs that lifted up her AZ Musicfest fans. One surprising Sutton Foster song was Dan Fogelberg's "The Same Auld Lang Syne" sung from the woman's point of view. If I had a glass, I would have drunk a toast to her tonight.
No wonder Sutton Foster is loved by audiences for her performances as Princess Winifred in “Once Upon a Mattress", Marian (the Librarian) Paroo in 'The Music Man' and her fantastic role as Reno Sweeney in the "Anything Goes" revival. Although known for her dancing as well as her singing, Sutton Foster did not do so at this AZ Musicfest concert. However, I feel that the audience was 'Dancing in the Streets" as they left the Highlands Scottsdale venue after this special performance.
