Laugh Biography

Laugh were a bunch of lads from Stockport, South Manchester, who got together in the mid 80's.

The most commonly recognised line-up is: Martin Wright (guitar, vocals), Martin Mittler (bass) Spencer Bertwistle (drums) and Craig Gannon (guitar) Although in truth the much-travelled Gannon (originally Aztec Camera) joined the band from Easterhouse towards the end of their days, before heading off for a brief stint with The Smiths.

Laugh first came to national attention following a court case in which Bertwistle's grandmother (dubbed 'Game Granny Bowers' by the NME) was prosecuted for noise pollution after allowing the band to practice in her basement. Nonetheless the band moved forward, a flexidisc issued with Manchester fanzine Debris began to create a stir and by the time of recording John Peel sessions in '86 and '87, Laugh were already signed to the Remorse label, releasing 'Take Your Time Yeah' and P'aul McCartney'. 'Time To Lose It' followed in '87

Following the departure of Gannon, the band began looking for a new direction, and whether vocalist Stella Grundy joined them, or they joined Stella, 'Intastella' was born, almost immediately providing them with the indie succes that had frustratingly eluded them as Laugh.
