Where to start. By thoroughly internalizing the indestructible discography of post-hardcore band Fugazi and then forgetting about them. Because The Messthetics is indeed a band in its own right. Bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty formed this successful offshoot with guitarist Anthony Pirog in 2016, followed by two solid punk jazz albums. Now, blistering jazz saxophonist James Brandon Lewis joins the band as a full member. They thus present their first album, out in March '24 on the legendary jazz label Impulse! Records. Judging by the Messthetics' enthusiastic audience response and their esteemed guest, listeners are eager to hear what happens when brilliant players like these challenge themselves through new collaborations.
