Oh my goodness. This concert was in the square for celebrating the PanAm games. I'd heard stories by Amon stating certain planners would want to showcase what was supposed to be Brazilian, or local talent with cultural sounds...lol, I could only glean that this also might have been the case.
When I heard Amon Tobin was performing a free concert downtown, we made sure we got there early. The square was pretty busy, at least two stages with local performers/singers I recall. A large group of Latin style music musicians were already on stage. But as dusk fell, most of the families with strollers started to leave. An MC introduced Amon Tobin from Brazil as the next act but since it started to get dark, the crowds started to dissipate. But as the family demographic started to filter out, young, skinny nerdy type boys started to encroach closer towards the stage. They weren't here for the PanAm games, they were here for Amon. My partner and I were already close to the barriers, but beside me was a lone, Donald Glover like man, who had his feet planted in place. He was patient for the next act, unaware of what to expect but the sporadic whoops and hollars towards the stage kept him curious. Finally, after what felt like 45mins, Amon took the stage. By the first few bars, any straggling families who stood by out of curiosity decided to nope out of there. But Donald Glover was not put off by the new sounds, and elected to stay....Stoic as he was, he endured nearly 30 minutes of the show, before finally departing the cacophony of excellence that eminated out of the square. Finally, all the fans jockeyed for the best spots closest to the stage. Amon Tobin, just so humble on stage twisting the knobs. There was a technical problem with the sound at one point, and that was when he taught me how to handle such situati
ons with class and professionalism. I was blown away. Definitely was the summer highlight for us. Best free concert ever! Best concert ever goes to ISAM 😉

Amon Tobin Biography
Sometime back in the mid-90s a fresh faced Brazilian ex-pat living in the UK decided he was going to put down his harmonica, pick up a sampler, and name himself after a Stephen King novel. The resulting album, Cujo's Adventures in Foam (released on Ninebar records, later reissued on Ninja Tune) signalled Amon Tobin's entry into the world of music.
