About this concert
Kern performs at The Four Provinces (25 Ravensdale Park, Kimmage, Dublin) to perform the trio’s eagerly awaited new album, “The Left & The Leaving”.. the first since their critically acclaimed debut album "False Deceiver". The Left and The Leaving is a similar showcase of the band’s unusual mix of personalities: Barry Kieran is a former Leinster champion fiddler, steeped in the raw, pure music of Oriel; Brendan McCreanor is an uilleann piper of rare passion and versatility whose distinctive playing is at once both modern and rooted in tradition; and SJ McArdle is a critically acclaimed songwriter and singer who has previously toured and recorded internationally. Kern’s music is a distillation of skillfully executed traditional elements - including a deep respect for native songlines - combined with fresh and often raw contemporary perspectives. Mining the deep cultural seams of their native Louth, the band presents thrilling interpretations of the music of the past and blistering, sometimes heart-wrenching new songs and compositions. The eclectic weave of their music is a result of their myriad influences and diverse formative experiences and backgrounds. The Left and the Leaving was produced by Trevor Hutchinson and features the Lúnasa/Waterboys man on double bass throughout. There are also appearances by Dónal O’Connor (Ulaid, At First Light) and Eamonn Moloney (Full Set, Aoife Scott). Kern have been hard at work since the extensive press and radio coverage which accompanied the their first album’s release, clocking up the miles on Ireland’s highways and byways. Along the way the band has also played shows in Germany, Canada and the US, including at Milwaukee Irish Fest and Folk Alliance International in Montréal. The band also won the 2018 Temple Bar TradFest showcase. The new album’s release comes hard on the heels of the band’s sell-out showcase concert at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2019 and resulting live appearances on Fleadh TV, RTE Radio 1’s John Creedon Show and Raidio na Gaeltachta. The release will be marked with an extensive Irish tour. Rich sonorous blending of uilleann pipes and fiddles lift the instrumentals while SJ McArdle's gritty voice and dexterous songs add an interesting extra lustre" - Roots Magazine "The band's dashing blend of traditional folk and contemporary songwriting is brilliantly captured on its debut CD, False Deceiver ... Steeped in the tradition yet boasting a contemporary poetic sensibility, it will be a surprise if Kern doesn’t go on to bigger and better things" - The Thin Air

Kern Biography

KERN blends the driving uilleann pipes and poignant whistles of Brendan McCreanor with the dynamic fiddle playing of Barry Kieran and the dark, authoritative voice and guitar of SJ McArdle.

All three men are from Louth, and this is reflected in their repertoire, which includes tunes and songs from all over the county as well as self-written new ones.

KERN has been featured on RTE Radio 1's Ceili House and has already played a host of festivals and concerts in Ireland.

Fresh from a triumphant appearance at Celtic Connections in Glasgow, gigs in Whelans, Dublin and Dolans, Limerick the band has just released their debut album 'False Deceiver' at their launch event in the Unitarian Church, Dublin.
