About this concert
A live theatrical journey through Sir Michael Parkinson’s musical DNA in words, pictures and performanceAlongside his interviewing and writing Sir Michael Parkinson has spent much of his career promoting the appreciation of the music of the Great American Songbook and encouraging those of the new generation who are fighting to keep that flame alive. In the process, he has developed an encyclopaedic knowledge of that genre as well as interviewing some of the greats and finding time to talent spot the likes of Bublé, Krall and Cullum. But he is much more than a jazzer. His taste in music takes in everything from Razorlight to Paul Simon, The Beatles to Oasis with the consequence that Sir Michael’s seal of approval came to mean a great deal with every record label in the country wanting to bottle his A&R talent. This passion and love of music in all its forms is celebrated in a new live theatrical show. In conversation with his long-term producer, collaborator and son Mike, using clips from his classic and extensive archive and featuring live performances by the multi-talented Joe Stilgoe we take a fascinating, entertaining and informative journey to the musical heart of Sir Michael Parkinson via Barnsley, sixties Manchester, Wood Lane and Broadcasting House.

Joe Stilgoe Biography

Joe is a singer, pianist and songwriter who, when not in the recording studio or writing, tours constantly with his band and as a solo act, having appeared at Ronnie Scott's, the Royal Festival Hall, The Queen Elizabeth Hall, The Barbican, The London Jazz Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Edinburgh Festival, Henley Festival, Barbados Festival, Sardinia Jazz Festival, Sicily Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Dubai Jazz Festival and in jazz clubs from New York to Berlin to Kuala Lumpur. This year he released his second album - 'We Look To The Stars', which immediately went straight to the top of the jazz charts while garnering great reviews from the national press. He has picked up notable fans including Chris Evans, RIchard Madeley, Christian Louboutin, and the broadcasting legend Sir Michael Parkinson. As a sought after cabaret act for private, charity and corporate events he regularly performs at the most exclusive events for a clientele as diverse as Madonna, Mark Ronson, Prince Edward, Sir John Major and Tom Ford (see below). Joe has worked extensively on radio, appearing on the Now Show and The Horne Section for Radio 4, and has been a contributor and special guest with Richard Madeley, Alan Carr, Michael Parkinson and numerous other Radio 2 programmes including Friday Night Is Music Night. He is a founding member of the hit comedy show, The Horne Section whose first series on Radio 4 was heard in early 2012. The Sunday Times "Excellent" The Times “…a truly remarkable singer songwriter, not to mention outstanding piano player… I thank you for creating that most exciting of moments when, as a lover of good music, you know you have seen and heard something remarkable.” Sir Michael Parkinson "Delightful...clever, witty and charming" ***** The Scotsman “Musical virtuoso” The Independent “Genius” The Herald "His piano playing is a cross between Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Les Dawson." - Ian Shaw "Better than Kraftwerk" - a man at Bestival '09 "Truly remarkable" - Sir Michael Parkinson "Amazing" - Tim Minchin "He writes the songs, sings them, plays them and creates the arrangements- all with a panache that leaves the rest of us bug eyed."
