Punk Mbedzi

The 28-year-old Producer/DJ Joseph Mbedzi, also known as “Punk Mbedzi”, hails from Polokwane, South Africa. His musical journey began in his childhood years where he spent most of his time listening to and collecting House Music, most of it having an afro-deep and soulful influence. His love for house continued to grow and led him to venture into producing and composing his own music at an
early age of 16 (2009). This eventually led him to his first release in 2010 (The Roots Are Calling); on the same year he met his fellow producer Da Capo, who played a big role in sharpening his musical skills. His sound continued growing and maturing, which drew attention from both international greats such as Boddhi Satva, Nick Holder, N’Dinga Gaba, as well as local giants who aided in sharing his skills with the world. His sharpened skills led him to do releases and remixes for established industry leaders such as Djeff & Silyvi, DJ Zinhle, Magic Soul, Lemon & Herb, and many other projects for labels such as Offering Recordings, DNH, Nulu Music, Peng Africa, Soul Candi, House Afrika.
Besides performing across the country, Punk Mbedzi has also shared the stage with industry greats at “Spring Fiesta” in South Africa. He then teamed up with Da Capo and DJ Swizz, bringing about their own movement, which eventually led to the birth of their own record label, Surreal Sounds. With a great backing from Soul Candi, 2013 saw him co-produce and release Surreal Sounds’ first album, “Surreal Selections Vol. 1”, which received a great wave of positive feedback. 2014 Punk released one of his most successful project titled “Déjà vu” which was number 1 on YFM's Hot99 Dance Show hosted by Just Mo.
2015 saw Punk Mbedzi being one of the “Selectors” on Soul Candi’s “Selektor Series: Limpopo Edition” compilation alongside fellow producers Chymamusique and Brazo Wa Afrika. He has also featured on the Lars Behrenroth’s Deeper Shades of House show, showcasing his skills.
Now, Punk Mbedzi is signed to label and company “Under Bridges” which he founded in 2016. With the creation of his own label, it is clear to see that he is holding nothing back in the pursue of music greatness.
