Sobre BEACON

BEACON
Beacon’s third full-length record enters sight as a work of meticulous revision and refraction. Returning home to New York in 2016, four years and several tours since the duo's first release with Ghostly International, Thomas Mullarney III and Jacob Gossett knew the next direction would be different. Their roster of sounds, driven by loops and textures, suddenly felt confined to a muted grayscale. Together they embarked on open-ended sessions, adopting a more linear style of songwriting. They fundamentally constructed demos from piano chords and guitar phrases with vocal melodies, editing iterations almost ad infinitum, looking through each from a multitude of angles. Compositions expanded, while others pared back to where they began. Like the bending of light, this abstractive and patient process outlines a space and scale in which seemingly separate colors — minimalist ballads, elaborate pop spirituals, and four-on-the-floor dance sequences — can coexist at different speeds, fanning out with spectral cohesion. A prismatic collection Beacon call Gravity Pairs.

Overall, I have to say it was an unforgettable night. Mostly because I was able to chat with Thomas and Jacob of Beacon both before and after the show. They were super nice, and even posed for a selfie with me, and signed copy of their vinyl album for me. Beacon is one of my all-time favorite artists; this is the third time I've seen them live since I first heard them in May 2017 when they opened for Tycho.
The show was very intimate, and deeply personal to me. When you're one of an artists's biggest fans, it's almost impossible to hear every single song you'd love to hear, but I was really hoping they would have done at least one of my favorites of theirs ("Mile A Minute," "Split In Two", "No Body", "Studio Audience", "Pause", "Go Back Now", "See", "Backbone", "Minor Structures", "Better Love", or "Still"), but that doesn't mean they didn't put on a great show. Standouts from their performance were the opener ("Show Me How"), "Can't Turn Back", "I'm The Answer", "Harm", and "Marion". The version of "Feeling's Gone" they did literally brought me to tears.
Their selection of merchandise was limited (4 CDs, 3 shirts, and a copy of the new album on vinyl). For one of the shirt designs, they had only one available, and it just happened to be my size (Large), so I bought it. The price ($20) was very reasonable, but I would have gladly given them more of my money if they had a bigger selection of merchandise.
Again, overall I'd say this was an unforgettable night that I will be bragging about for a while. I hope Beacon comes back to Boston again soon!
