Dar Williams

A delightful show in a venue that felt like just the right size. Selby Town Hall; an attractive smaller venue of “up to 150”, offers first come, first served seating. I arrived only 30 mins prior to show time, but the front row was open so I took a center seat. Heather Maloney (new to me) was a lovely opener for Dar. Her stories & songs of loss touched me deeply. A duet cover of “Woodstock” by she & Dar was an unexpected bonus during Heather’s set. Dar’s set was everything I hoped for & more. A consummate story teller & songsmith, she even dressed the part, in jewelled tones evocative of her new album’s namesake. When someone suddenly took ill & her set had to be paused, Dar pivoted with admirable ease. She began taking requests, while also expressing concern for the unfortunate party & reassuring us that this happens fairly frequently (as a seasoned performer, her calm demeanour kept things relaxed while staff assisted the person). It would have been helpful for the venue staff to provide more updates to give Dar a better idea of how long she needed to pause, but I understand they had their hands full assisting the person who became ill. When she was able to resume her set, Dar combined songs from Hummingbird Highway seamlessly with past classics requested by the audience. I particularly enjoyed Sacred Mountain & What Bird Did You See. As this tour is one to promote her new album, I think Dar may have been surprised by the number of requests for older material. As an immigrant to the UK from the US, I wish I’d thought to tell her after the show that obtaining new music from niche US artists can be a prohibitively expensive process for folks in the UK (sadly, not everyone knows about Bandcamp). Despite grappling with the last vestiges of a cold she caught in Dublin, Dar & her voice rallied for the rest of the set & 2 encores. I’ll treasure the memory of Dar, Heather, & the whole audience singing Iowa together forever. The show was wonderful & I’m so glad I went!

Amazing as always! So glad this was a solo show as Dar was able to do different songs than she would’ve if she had a band. I was so excited to hear “Emerald” as that was the first time I heard a song from my favorite Dar album live. Thanks for a great show!!!!

Although she was getting over something and her voice was almost an octave lower, she was all in and gave a great and inspiring set, a nice mix of old and new! Fun stories. Opener Seth Glier was great and accompanied her set on piano and vocals. Taylor was a nice addition on cello and vocals!

This was the show of my life!!! I love Dar and The Nields. It was so fun!!!!!! Dar brought out Nerissa and Katryna for a few songs, including one of my favorite songs in the universe, “I Am The One Who Will Remember Everything”. Thank you thank you for an amazing show!

Great concert! There was a fantastic group, who obviously loved her. This was my first time to see her in person. What a personality. I loved that the songs were her own, and had so much to say! Such a talented song writer, vocalist, and guitar player! Hope we can get her back to Wellsboro PA again sometime. England's going to love her!

Dar never disappoints! I am used to seeing her with a band so it was a lovely treat to have an intimate show with just her and her guitar, and she took many crowd requests- really lovely.

Love her! It was so wonderful to have this time to step inside a safe place and listen to the amazing vocals and lyrics of this most talented human. Grateful for her music.

The venue and artist were first rate. Dar is such an amazing presence - have seen her several times and would see her a hundred more! Best singer song-writer I know of.

Dar is an amazing singer, songwriter. Her stories between songs were so funny. As great as 20 years ago when I first saw her. Amy Ray band were great too! I’m a new fan of them now!

I went into the show nostalgic for my experiences of Dar at outdoor festivals & concerts in the 90s. Dar is even better now. Her songs are ageless and her performance seasoned to perfection, revealing new meanings for me now. Same lyrics, new perspective. The stories & reflections that Dar uses to stitch together the performance were funny & intimate, like her songs. She’s such a treasure.

Dar Williams is an incomparable singer-songwriter and a consummate storyteller. Her concerts are the perfect blend of old favorites and great new music. I never miss her when she’s in town!

Don’t think you have been in London since. It was Bob Harris in 1996 that brought you to my attention and I saw you first at The Jazz Cafe. Mortal City and The Honesty Room . Come back soon.. Jonathan. 10/10.

It was a songwriting workshop, and I was so impressed by the environment that Dar created to make us all feel safe and respected. I also learned a lot, and so look forward to reading her book that came with the workshop. It was a huge inspiration for me, and helped me to feel more alive and connected to others who love music. I hope to attend more of these, as well as her songwriting retreats. I can’t say enough about the impact it had on me😊!

Great music and banter. When I heard the intro to ”When I was a Boy” at the very start, I knew the event would not be a quiet little coronavirus gig! Some audio difficulties, though. Thank you, Dar!

Everything about the venue and this artist I follow was perfect! The show was a perfect way to kick off a year full of concerts and live performances.

Great show! Her music was fantastic as always, and hearing her read from her most recent book was a bonus. Intelligent and interesting insights into the characteristics of a vibrant community. A most enjoyable evening!
