A fine concert of Nick's songs, with pretty excellent sound balance - important where there are two brilliant guitarists. This is new to me: because Louis Wigget is an improvising bass guitarist, a whole new level of interplay has been introduced. The band played two loooong improvisations, all three instrument players creating an absolutely majestic structure of music. Completely stunning to me. I was thinking that this is Cream, better than Cream, for our time. Instead of the bass "supporting" the music of the guitarists and drummer, Louis looked for long periods like the core of the music. Amazing to see the three string players as a pure trio, each of equal force. And the richness of their sound was really "incredible", as in "I can't quite believe how wonderful this is!" The second long improvisation was jazz in that it felt as if they were creating it right then, not a rehearsed song with solo sections, but fully new in the moment, with long quieter, ruminative sections, sections of Paul, Louis and Nick trading ideas and lines. I have never experienced something quite like this apart from jazz concerts. At any moment the future was uncertain and I had to try to just take in that this was unfolding, being created among the musicians, perhaps as new to them as it was to me. I really wondered if they had done this before or if, here on the first night of their tour, they were as surprised as I was. Again, I think Louis has brought this to them in a way not possible before, because he has played in different bands in different roles and is fully secure leading as much as supporting. An awesome evening. I must say that the song list covered a range of classic and new, with the humorous Stoned Train Driver being a favorite. For whatever reason, the tone of Louis's bass and amp at the opening of that one (if I'm remembering correctly) was a massive roar, delightful. Maybe the idea of a potential engine disaster was in there. I do hope others will post.

The Bevis Frond is a British musical group whose range covers hard edge to melancholy vintage indie rock to poetic, "classic-rock" songcraft with a thick Walthamstow accent. Nick Saloman is the band's frontman and songwriter. They have recorded many albums out on various independent labels.

Saloman was originally in a band known as the Bevis Frond Museum in the late 1960s and in 1979 was in a band called the Von Trapp Family. The Bevis Frond, however, was a one man band from the start with the release of a 250 copy pressing of Miasma in 1987. Saloman's desire was to "record the kind of music I'd like to listen to...I wanted a Hendrix/Wipers, Byrds sound but with a distinctly British feel." Subsequent albums were also recorded in a home studio until after the release of his sixth album, Any Gas Faster, when he began to record in an outside studio. This is also the point that he began touring. Another 1990 album, Magic Eye, was a collaboration with Twink of the Pink Fairies.

Early albums were usually entirely recorded by Saloman although most later albums have been recorded by the current touring band. For performances, The Bevis Frond usually has Adrian "Ade" Shaw on bass. Bevis Frond material is typically released on Saloman's own Woronzow Records label, and is frequently featured in the Ptolemaic Terrascope magazine and accompanying records/CDs. The Bevis Frond also record with and write much of the material for US singer Mary Lou Lord. The song "Lights Are Changing" was chosen for inclusion on Children of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the Second Psychedelic Era, 1976-1995.
