Jazz chanteuse and songwriter Katy Free makes music that feels at once timeless and deeply personal. Her work is rooted in the Great American Songbook, shaped by the Gulf Coast, and colored by her own story.

Based in Pensacola, Florida, Katy brings a versatile, expressive voice to jazz standards, unexpected reinterpretations of songs across genres, and a growing catalog of original music. Her sound draws from the soul-baring interpretation of Sarah Vaughan and Etta James, the vulnerability and storytelling of Joni Mitchell, and the genre-crossing versatility of Linda Ronstadt, all filtered through Katy’s own warm, intimate approach to performance.

Katy’s musical foundation began in classical voice, musical theatre, and choral performance, including appearances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. She later studied musicology and jazz voice at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, while performing throughout the eastern United States. Eventually, she followed her longtime muse south to the Gulf Coast and made her home in Pensacola.

Then, for six years, Katy stepped away from performing. The time away became an unexpected part of her story, a season of healing, rebuilding, and finding her way back not only to the stage, but to herself as an artist. She has returned to music with a new sense of purpose and creativity that feels honest, meaningful, and fully her own.

This return has led to Katy’s next chapter as a recording artist and songwriter. She is currently creating Never Say Never, a full-length album blending original songs with carefully chosen interpretations that reflect the breadth of her musical life. The project captures both where she has been and the artist she has become: grounded in jazz, unafraid to cross genres, and inviting listeners into her own stories.

Whether performing an intimate standard, reshaping a familiar song, or singing something she wrote herself, Katy approaches music with curiosity, vulnerability, and a deep respect for the song itself. Her performances are about connection and welcoming listeners into the music with her.
