Abarra

A ferry connects ports, enabling exchange—and thus, progress. It effortlessly crosses
the open water between human-made borders. This image reflects the creative
identity of Abarra, who named themselves after the Arabic word for “ferry.” three
people, three home countries, three classical music educations at three different
universities: this listing gives a sense of the cultural diversity within Abarra—and how
vibrant the music born from this background sounds.
Plucked instruments like the oud and saz, along with folkloric vocals, set a distinctly
oriental tone, which flows into the deep, warm sound of a viola. With clarinet,
saxophone, and bassoon, the music takes on an almost orchestral dimension.
Adding to this is an electronic groove that pulses beneath the fusion of harmonies
like a healthy, steady heartbeat—ancient, ritualistic, and yet as modern as it can be.
In the universal language of music, understood by all through dance, Abarra tells us
of all there is to discover on a shared journey.
