Sobre Luísa Sobral
Lauded far and wide as one of the most important singer-songwriters in a new generation of Portuguese artists, Luísa Sobral has achieved immense international success in her decade-long career. Her debut LP The Cherry On My Cake quickly went Platinum after many weeks topping the local charts, whilst follow-up release Lu-Pu-I-Pi-Sa-Pa received Gold with lead single ‘João’ playing its way into the hearts of millions of Portuguese listeners.
Sobral’s fourth, semi self-titled album Luísa was a risky collaborative effort involving some of the scene’s most esteemed talent. Produced by renowned American producer Joe Henry and featuring seasoned jazz musicians and multi-instrumentalists Marc Ribot, Greg Leisz, Jay Bellerose, Patrick Warren, David Piltch and Levon Henry, the LP was immediately declared one of 2016's best albums by a slew of Portuguese critics.
'Rosa' (2018) has been warmly received by national and international audiences and critics. Songlines magazine, a reference in what World Music is concerned, rated it 4 stars. Produced by the prestigious Catalan musician and producer Raul Refree - who also produced albuns for Sílvia Pèrez Cruz, Rosalía and Rocío Márquez, among others - 'Rosa' is an intimist album where Luísa travels new territories in her composition and arrangements. This new approach takes form in the original line up that has delighted audiences: voice and guitar are joined by a horn trio with tuba, french horn and flugelhorn.
Having performed at a multitude of festivals and events in over 15 countries including Austin’s SXSW, WOMADelaide, Barcelona Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival, and a performance on Later… with Jools Holland, Luísa has garnered a mass of dedicated fans the world over. She has received two Globos de Ouro nominations (The Portuguese equivalent of The Golden Globes), and received a Commander of the Order of Merit from the Portuguese President together with her brother, after becoming the first first-ever Portuguese act to win the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest with her career defining composition ‘Amar pelos Dois’. She regularly composes for artists such as Ana Moura, António Zambujo, Mayra Andrade, Salvador Sobral, Italian singer Tosca, among others.
