Charlottesville’s Smiling Islanders formed in August 2014 as the brainchild of David Gray, Ben Laderberg, Tim Swartz, and Wes Bonelli. The foursome met as students at UVa and soon discovered a shared passion for live performance. The band's music is an eclectic mix of genres, drawing inspiration from classic rock, jam/psychedelic, funk/fusion, and modern indie. After cutting their teeth playing campus events and local bars, the group gained momentum and began performing in various central Virginia locales. The band released their debut EP, titled Candelabra, in April 2015. They continue to perform in central and southwestern Virginia, Richmond, and Washington D.C.
