MELVOY is the breath of San Diego native turned San Francisco dwelling Mexican-Spanish-American singer, guitarist and scooter-crasher -- Emmanuel Castro. Previously of San Diego's punk rock scene, Castro led Warp Tour rich band The Binge (think Green Day meets Anti-Flag) before moving to SF in 2008. MELVOY's first permutation was that of a four-piece with dancey pop hooks and soaring lyrics that of which took them to SXSW, that sailed them onto a Korean tour with Korea's #1 selling rock artist Crying Nut. When Castro, literally lost all band members to love and marriage in 2013, he recorded himself the album Irrelevant Elephant, with Strokes' producer Gordon Raphael. This record, being still dancey drops the pop-punk edge and is richer, deeper and more sexy then anything he's done before with a raw aspect that honors the Binge's punk roots. Irrelevant Elephant is a diverse record with a lot of sounds -- Brit-indie-dancey tracks like I'm So Special, Lost At Bay, and San Franfrisco, then Latin Radiohead-esque Time of My Life to covering The Nerves' 'Many Roads to Follow'. Compared to the likes of Arctic Monkeys and surf guitar stylings of Link Wray, Castro adds twists of Latin flavors of which gets the hips swaying from teens to great aunts. MELVOY, whos name is an anagram for My Love, plays as a high energy three-piece with friends rotating as bassist and drummer, slipping in horn player Aaron Priskorn for select tracks. MELVOY is a reminder, that Rock+Roll hasn't completely vanished -- it's just been cooped up in a box of sunshine and tequila. VIVA.
