Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek, the masterminds behind the Chicago group Whitney, are two of the most talented tunesmiths to come out of indie rock in recent years—Elton John’s a fan, and Pitchfork called the songwriting on their 2016 debut, Light Upon the Lake, “near flawless.” On their new album, Candid, they lend the band’s polished Laurel Canyon-inspired sound to songs by everyone from John Denver to SWV.
