James McGarvey

James McGarvey is a singer/songwriter specializing in unconventional covers of songs from the ‘80s and ‘90s. James began his pursuit of music at the age of eight with his study of the trumpet. His appreciation for the intricacies of melodies and harmonies developed as he became interested in new-age jazz and fusion, such as Chris Botti and Tiger Okoshi. James quickly found his head full of lyrics which were clamoring to be set to music. When his parents said no to the electric guitar, James picked up an acoustic and taught himself to play so he could write his own music. As James continued writing music, he was influenced by the likes of Duncan Sheik, Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz, and John Mayer. James has continued his lifelong exploration of music through participation in choirs, musical theater, and collaborations with other artists. His heavy guitar attack and passionate vocals make for a unique sound: part folk, part rock, and all soul. Originally from New England, James was a regular fixture of the music scene in Southern New Hampshire. Since moving to California in the summer of 2015, James has played several venues in San Diego County including restaurants, breweries, and farmers’ markets. A typical three-hour show will be broken down into two 45-minute sets and one 60-minute set. Music selection will feature a range of songs from spanning the decades from the classic rock of the ‘60s to adult contemporary hits of today.
