About this concert
Compositions & Improvisations by John Kameel Farah mixed with electrified works by Bach An artist portrait: https://youtu.be/nTTueGmKiOM Composer John Kameel Farah immerses himself in a world of keyboards, from the original ancient synthesizer - the organ - to any of its keyboard descendants. He loops and transforms the piano, improvising over electronic patterns and soundscapes, intertwining Middle-Eastern modes and melodies with Renaissance and Baroque harmonies and counterpoint. Bach Preludes & Fugues emerge, re-composed with electronic accompaniment. The interplay of piano, organ and synthesizer sounds blur and meld as they reverberate in the church's acoustic space, creating an experience Farah calls "Baroque-Mid-Eastern-Cyberpunk." Saturday, April 22 Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche (Zossener Str. 65) Doors open 19:30, concert begins 20:00 Entrance €15/10 BIO John Kameel Farah is a composer-pianist based between Berlin and Toronto. He studied piano and composition at the University of Toronto, where he was a two-time recipient of the Glenn Gould Composition Award, later having private lessons with Terry Riley in California. In 1998 he gave a recital of the solo piano works of Arnold Schönberg in Toronto, and in 2016 performed the first book of Bach’s “Das Wohltemperierte Klavier” in Berlin. He has been a member of the Canadian Electronic Ensemble since 2009. https://www.facebook.com/events/1299673774089892

John Kameel Farah Biography

John Kameel Farah is a Canadian pianist and composer who embraces aspects of Early & Experimental Music, Improvisation, Middle-Eastern Music rhythms and modes and all forms of Electronic Music. He studied piano and composition at the University of Toronto, where he was a two-time recipient of the Glenn Gould Composition Award, and afterwards took private lessons with minimalist composer Terry Riley in California. In performance he combines the piano with effects processing and synthesizers, moving freely between improvised fugues, drone soundscapes, Near Eastern scales and modes, and driving, asymmetrical rhythms, referring to it as “Baroque-Middle-Eastern-Cyberpunk”.
