Performing Live: Halou, a name that hums like a half-remembered whisper from the fog-drenched streets of San Francisco, emerged in the late '90s as part trip-hop shadow, part dreampop shimmer, all restless invention. Conjured by Ryan and Rebecca Coseboom, with the spectral engineer Count lurking in the mix, their debut, We Only Love You (1998), felt like stumbling into a midnight diner where the jukebox plays only echoes of 4AD's golden age. Halou returned in 2019 with Brutalism For Lovers. Today, they remain in constant reinvention, a riddle wrapped in reverb, forever teasing the edge of what music might mean if you let it drift just out of reach. Hectorine's Sarah Gagnon calls up the spirit of the Sumerian warrior goddess Inanna to explain the tumult that surrounded the making of Arrow of Love, her third full-length album. Hectorine's latest album tells a lower key tale of death and rebirth, encompassing a period in which Gagnon lost a job and ended a relationship under the shadow of a modern plague and raging wildfires, retreating into enforced solitude until it was possible to emerge again. Though the subject matter is heavy, the music is not. Gagnon's velvety contralto -- if you think she sounds a bit like Christine McVie, you're not the first -- weaves with assurance among trance-like dream pop architectures. Identical Homes crafts his music from the ethers of time, and time likely spent building cabins, trout fishing and wandering in the greater wilds of Northern California's Humboldt County. Envision the dusty sounds of Boards of Canada and catchiness of Tycho mixed with blurred samples from a half working CB radio from a decaying Rum Diary tour van and you'll have a pretty good idea of where Identical Homes is coming from. Shark in the Water: If you like sharks, like to party and have ears, this is the band for you! All out, heavy as hell surf music.
