About this concert
The legendary reggae band - Misty In Roots, return for their first London show in over five years, and exclusive show for 2024, at Camden Town's historic Electric Ballroom (6th October 2024). With speical guests Ruts DC and Pama Int'l (DJ set). Misty In Roots are one of the finest and most vital reggae acts the world has seen. A fact amply born out in BBC 6 music?s 2018 music documentary by Don Letts and by their debut album, which is regarded as one of the best live albums of all time - ?Live At The Counter Eurovision 79?. Commonly known as John Peel?s favourite reggae band (who they recorded a staggering nine BBC Radio One sessions for), they produced truly uplifting and righteous roots reggae music with vitally important, socially conscious messages. Originally formed in the mid-1970?s to back reggae star - Nicky Thomas, they went onto create ya their own, unique orthodox reggae sound. In the late 1970?s, at a time of great political and social unrest in the UK, and with racism on the raise, Misty In Roots became a major unifying force in the Rock Against Racism movement, playing alongside The Ruts, Elvis Costello, The Specials and Tom Robinson. This built a huge new, multi-cultural audience for them and reggae. Some six decades on Misty In Roots have a huge global following, and are still regarded as one of the most powerful reggae bands there has been. Formed in 1977, The Ruts led the way in forward thinking brew of punk and dub, as so phenomenally demonstrated on their classic hits - Staring At The Rudeboys, Jah War and their Top 10 hit single Babylon Is Burning. Their first incendiary release - In A Rut, was actually funded by Misty In Roots and released on their People Unite label! Both bands went onto play vital parts in the Rock Against Racism movement. Following the untimely death of lead singer Malcolm Owen in 1980 the band morphed into Ruts DC. Five decades on, with original members John "Segs" Jennings (bass) and Dave Ruffy (drums) at the helm, they are still setting dance floors alight around the globe and continuing to release world class music, as their latest Counterculture album superbly proves. Don?t miss the opportunity to see Misty In Roots and Ruts DC first show together in decades, plus a DJ set from UK reggae runners - Pama International, who will be exclusively premiering their brand new album at the show!

As good a show form them as I’ve seen. They clearly were enjoying themselves and it showed in the performance.

Ruts D.C. Biography

RUTS / RUTS DC

What do you know about Ruts / Ruts DC? What do you want to know about Ruts DC? It’s nearly fifty years since the two sevens clashed. In a little over fifty more years, they will clash again.

Roughly around the time they last clashed the Ruts were hot wiring barbed wire guitar, passionate poetry and rhythm weaponry together somewhere in a London that probably does not exist anymore. Splicing heat haze dub thinking to the energy flash of punk ,close to the big bang of late twentieth century culture. Open to ideas. Committed to ideals.

Some band’s sound punk. Some look punk. Some even look and sound punk. And some, simply, are punk. The Ruts were early challengers to the misunderstood notion that punk was a somewhat luddite dogma wherein complexity, creative exploration and musical prowess were considered a shameful affectation.

Ruts and Ruts DC songs move with a precise muscularity and carry lyrics of eloquent and graceful rage. No two-chord thrash with shouting over the top.

Go back. Listen to everything. From the very beginning to now, with the forthcoming release of new album ‘Counterculture?’, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2016’s incendiary ‘Music Must Destroy’ album, due this November 11th via their own Sosumi Recordings.

Counterculture. Now is the time. Was there ever an age with more reason to rebel?

Counterculture. Do not think you can simply buy a way in.

To Counter; to push against, to oppose and redress. By being a spectator, you are NOT a part of the counterculture.

“Counterculture? For us, it never went away,” says bassist and vocalist John ‘Segs’ Jennings. “We’ve always been on the outside and still are. It’s ok to be a freak. That’s why The Ruts started in the first place. If it’s still inside you, it’s time to light that flame again. Get to know what you don’t know. Come and borrow my lighter.”

And now ,up to date - We get to hear the first taste of the new album in the title track and new single ‘Counterculture’.

Drums and Bass building the defence wall. Guitar and whatever else lobbed in stun/attack mode. That is Ruts DC. That is all you really need to know.

People unite.

‘Counterculture?’ will be released November 11th via Sosumi Recordings and is available to pre-order .

Never Surrender .
