About this concert
PAT PHILIPS PRESENTSJoo Bosco has been loved in his home country of Brazil for decades, since the 60s when he first began composing and performing. In the early 90s, Bosco mounted a major tour of the US, and since then he has become increasingly popular internationally, regularly performing at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. He is also one of Brazils formidale songwriters, haing supplied Elis Regina with some of her best material. Bosco stepped into the performance limelight and has been one of the more compeling figures in Brazilian music for years. Despite his growing popularity outside of his homeland, Bosco remains thoroughly attached to Brazil to the point of never leaving it for extended periods; his music, though rooted in Brazils classic samba and bossa nova traditions, combines rock and roll, jazz and other ethnic styles in an eclectic brew that is as inventive and challenging as he is.His Voice, full of soul, sings Brazils melodies with the blood of African slaves in his veins and weeps melodic songs from his Leganese ancestors as well. This ethnic mix makes Joao Bosco a very eclectic artist. He came to Rio, was introduced to Jobim, Chico Guarque, Bossa Nova, and worked with superstar Elis Regina and others. Together with poet Aldir Blanc, they composed a vast repertoire, now considered classics.Joo Bosco currently performs with quartet - Ricardo Silveira/Guitar, Kiko Freitas/Drums, Guto Wirtti/Bass who will be at Birdland with the great Joao Bosco.
