As a kid growing up in South London’s Catford, MNEK always had an inquisitive appetite for new sounds. He loved the ‘90s R&B compilation CDs that his Dad played in the car, as well as his Mum’s favourite divas like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Janet Jackson — influences that are clear in his one-of-a-kind strutting beats and soulful vocals to this day. For MNEK, the past four years of focusing on songwriting and production has allowed him to go through the life experiences — including first love and first heartbreak — that every good lyricist needs to have to draw from.
