I’ve been fortunate to have seen The Heart Aches at this venue twice, and I can honestly say that as much as I am proud of the band’s Adelaide provenance, that this was their spiritual home. Hard rock, gentle souls. The place radiates love, as does the band. This show was the second and one of six I saw on the goodnight tour, and it was probably the best. So much fun. So much joy. So much sweet sadness in saying goodbye.

The last show ever from one of the most beautiful ugly bands Australia has ever produced. The juxtaposition of furious drums, driving bass and cutting guitar riffs against rousing, heart-felt, heart-rending lyrics has been an addictive recipe since these uber-talented folk emerged from Adelaide. They were at the height of their powers when they pulled the pin. Our hearts do ache. But the memories and the music are always with us.

Hard Aches were great, unfortunately the sound wasn’t amazing at the Newy Hotel. Granted, Newcastle has a bad rep for violence and being a little unsavoury in the past, however this is not at all reflective of the current climate and it was extremely disheartening to hear the lead singer trashing the town several times throughout the set, especially considering the transformation Newcastle has undergone over the past few years.
