Hannah Cohen is a rising star. With every release, her songwriting—both lyrically and musically—becomes more sophisticated, personal, heartfelt, and universally relatable. She has a voice of an angel, and when it’s blended with the beautiful backing vocals from her guitarist and keyboardist, the result is pure sonic bliss. Seeing Hannah and her band perform live only reinforced how special they are. They’re a wonderfully cohesive ensemble, with every member serving the songs rather than competing for the spotlight. In a time when so much new music can feel disposable, Hannah Cohen’s music reminds me that there are still artists creating work with genuine soul, depth, and lasting quality. I sincerely hope Hannah and her band receive the recognition and accolades they deserve. They’re making the kind of music that stays with you long after the concert is over.

An intimate gig with the stage crowded with talent and instruments, playing the stand out tracks from Cohen's 2019 album Welcome Home. Cohen's vocals carried supremely well having invested in a good quality mic and skillful engineer wrestling with the confined basement of The Hug and Pint. Cohen stood centre with her eponymous guitar embossed with Polynesian imagery, transporting the audience with her powerful vocals. Sam Evian's band provided a solid 360 support with Evian himself showing his musical prowess, seamlessly switching from hypnotic synth keyboards to lead guitar multiple times in the same track. The collaboration between these songwriters could well be one of the greatest musical synergies on the current alternative music scene and certainly under appreciated given the gig was not sold out. Perhaps due to competing bills in Glasgow, with Courtney Barnett, Sports Team and others playing on a drab Thursday night. The crowd seemed to appreciate All I Wanted most, however my personal favourite is This Is Your Life which was an excellent closer and one of the stand out tracks of 2019. Cohen triumphed on her first visit to Glasgow, she is very welcome back.
