Steeped in the black velvet finery of gothic doom metal, TRIBUNAL weaves dark tales of ultimate judgement, never-ending rain, and forsaken despair. Their debut record, The Weight of Remembrance (2023, 20 Buck Spin), offers a sound that is instantly familiar with nods to the ‘80s and ‘90s yet not a mere homage. The classic doom riffage borders on death metal heaviness, like My Dying Bride filtered through a colossal stained-glass edifice. Woven through with the mournful cry of the cello, the album evokes the feeling of a painstakingly composed orchestral movement fit for a crumbling cathedral overgrown with moss.

TRIBUNAL was formed by classically trained cellist/bassist/vocalist Soren Mourne and guitarist/vocalist Etienne Flinn, who frequently trade off vocals alternating between haunted wailing cleans, scathing black metal-style shrieks, and dread-filled death calls. While The Weight of Remembrance was written and recorded as a duo, long-standing live members, drummer Julia Geaman, guitarist Jessica Yang, and keyboardist Dallas have recently joined the fold to bring TRIBUNAL to its full form.
