The Capital について

Rewind to 2012 and you would find a third of the members of The Capital playing with the Preston based melodic punk outfit Failsafe. One of the top live acts of their day, Failsafe had a committed legion of fans, built up around successive tours sharing stages with the heavyweights of the alternative scene. A Day To Remember, Anti-Flag, The Bouncing Souls, Cute Is What We Aim For and even Paramore were touring partners and as such the band drew crowds and praise from diverse corners of the industry for their eclectic mix of punk rock, hardcore and melodious rock displayed on their successful early albums, ‘What We Are Today’ and ‘The Truth Is…”.

Returning to the studio once more, the band recorded a collection of songs titled ‘Routines’ which would be released through the American label, Cardboard Empire and followed up with tour dates alongside Hawthorne Heights and Forever Came Calling. However, not long after it’s release, their time as Failsafe would be brought to a sudden and heartbreaking end. On New Years Day, 2015 the band would wake to the devastating news that their guitarist and dearest friend, Matthew Cogley, had suddenly passed away.

Where many would struggle to hold on to their youthful idealism in the face of such tragedy, the members who would go on to form The Capital knew that they had a job to do. Brought together by their love of Matt and under a united banner of grief, the members of Failsafe began to put into place a new project that would seek to honour the memory of their dear friend teaming up with mental health charities We Are Hummingbird and CALM and various fundraising events to raise money in his name.

“It’s out of respect and love for Matt that we’re carrying on playing music, because that’s what brought us together in the first place. We’re never going to move on, but we can move forward and always keep him with us.” explained guitarist Andy Sprake at the time.

Piecing together members from Failsafe, as well as musicians with links to Matt Cogley (guitarist Nik Taylor from Next Stop Atlanta and acclaimed singer-songwriter Seamus McLoughlin), The Capital began to get to work, their musical direction steered by the steely melodic punk of groups like Hot Water Music and The Flatliners, and the showmanship and vocal acrobatics of more mainstream influences like the Foo Fighters and Mumford and Sons.

In just a few short months, the band were ready to record their debut EP titled 'Hummingbird' with the first single (also titled 'Hummingbird') inciting a powerful response from newly found fans who shared widely the deeply touching song racking up thousands of views in a matter of weeks.

After dipping their toes into the touring circuit of the North West playing shows with the likes of Philadelphia punks Beach Slang, The Capital began work on their follow-up EP 'This Place Matters' inspired by the sad, slow demise of many of the UK's best music venues.

With a release date of 23rd June 2018, ‘This Place Matters’ can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and all other good digital outlets.
