Description du concert
As with Mozart, Poe, Van Gogh and countless others, Arthur Russell only received proper recognition for his genius after what was a short but hugely influential life in the 80s New York music scene.A maverick in the truest sense of the term, his collaborations ranged from Philip Glass and Steve Reich to Nicky Siano and David Byrne, excelling from classical and avant garde cello through to floor filling disco and new wave, to dub and garage. It’s not just the work under his own name either, music from his aliases such as Loose Joints, Dinosaur L have endured just as strongly.Performing a selection of deep cuts from his eclectic body of work will be virtuoso cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson plus special guests. As a composer she has scored original music for various productions and as an arranger and orchestrator, she has worked with the London Symphony Orchestra (Hugh Masekela), and the BBC Symphony Orchestra (Urban Classic). She has extensively toured the UK and several countries in Europe, whilst gaining a MOBO award nomination and gaining airplay on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 1Xtra.LINE UPAyanna Witter-JohnsonLa TimpaPRICEStanding: £10 | Restaurant: £15

Biographie de Ayanna Witter-Johnson
Singer, songwriter, cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson is a rare exception to the rule that classical and contemporary music cannot successfully co-exist. Graduating with a first from the Laban School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music, she has toured with Anoushka Shankar, Courtney Pine, recorded with Akala and composed for the London Symphony Orchestra. The twist is her winning the acclaimed amateur night at the Apollo in Harlem, gaining a MOBO award nomination and getting airplay on BBC Radio 1 & BBC 1Xtra. Able to straddle both worlds effortlessly because of her musical prowess, non-compromising lyrics and ability to deftly reinterpret songs on the cello. She is the definition of eclectic soul.
