New York City’s Imal Gnawa merges the ancient Moroccan Gnawa tradition with futuristic electronic
soundscapes. Atlas Phoenix's guembri and vocals provide the foundation, while Eilon Elikam and
Andrew Fox layer in percussion, synths, and electronic production. Together, their music preserves the
traditional and ceremonial aspects of gnawa while engaging with the modern realm of ambient, synth
driven minimalism. As a form of ancient psychiatry, their contemporary gnawa ritual is a healing
technology, initiating a trance state in the listener through hypnotic rhythm and melody.
