Description du concert
What do you get if you mix an interesting British composer, an opera that never ceases to fascinate and some of Grieg's most beautiful tones? The answer is a wonderful mix and a magnificent end to the season.
The New York-based Briton Anna Clyne is a sought-after composer by both orchestras and concert promoters. Her This Midnight Hour (2015) is a musical journey that spans widely, and contains great contrasts. The play draws inspiration from poems by Juan Ramón Jiménez and Charles Baudelaire, without depicting specific content. The deep tones of the opening from the double basses are reminiscent of Wagner's Die Walküre. There are also several lyrical sections, where there is no shortage of effects reminiscent of film music. The play ends with a dull blow in the timpani.
Program:
Anna Clyne - This Midnight Hour
Edvard Grieg - Piano Concerto in A minor op. 16
Georges Bizet - Carmen Suite 1 and 2, excerpt from Tianyi Lu (1875)
