Description du concert
In a time of mass extinction and colonial violence; five queer artists from lineages of Philippines, Palestine, Puerto Rico, Taiwan and China, will bury something inherited from empire they are ready to leave behind. Threading together a tapestry of song, film, movement, theater, poetry and mythology, they will take us on a journey of reclaiming intimacy with the land, personal and collective healing, and the building of queer liberatory futures. Join us as we plant the seeds of a new world that will grow from the wreckage of the old. This 70 minute collaborative show is a part of treya lam’s “otherland” - a ritual that utilizes a chamber-folk song cycle, spoken word, movement and film to: process the loss of a parent or loved one; explore radical self-acceptance; and ultimately find collective healing. co-created by: Denice Frohman Jess X Snow Marie Lloyd Paspe treya lam Huda Asfour co-sponsored by Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality at New York University and Poets & Writers.

Biographie de treya lam

treya lam is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who’s joyously complex identity informs but does not define their work, whether solo or when collaborating with a variety of multidisciplinary ensembles. Their strident voice, politically charged songwriting and fluency on guitar, piano and looped viola recalls Nina Simone and Andrew Bird. treya’s debut Good News was created by womxn and genderqueer collaborators and released via Kaki King’s label. lam is currently developing otherland - an audiovisual chamber-folk album on healing in the wake of grief and loss, radical self acceptance and the relationship between individual and collective healing as a 2022-2023 recipient of the New York Voices commission from Joe’s Pub at The Public.

Smithsonian Magazine states lam’s work “perfectly captures the mixture of love, loss and hope”. lam is a OneBeat fellow, NYCLU Artist Ambassador and active member of the Resistance Revival Chorus. Their song Dawn was featured on the RRC’s debut album This Joy - released on Ani Difranco’s Righteous Babe Records. treya was an artist in residence at Joe’s Pub in 2019 and MASS MoCA in 2020. lam has performed original music at Lincoln Center, the Prospect Park Bandshell and the American Museum of Natural History.
