Biographie de Gents & Liars

Settle into the driver’s seat. It’s time for a road trip, destination unknown. Skip through the static airwaves with each turn of the radio dial until a fresh yet familiar sound rings out through the speakers. You have discovered the Gents & Liars, a band of groove engineers based in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Long before the Gents & Liars were creating authentic outlaw country perfect for analog airwaves, the six bandmates were cutting their teeth on stages with rock and country bands, bluegrass groups, and everything in between. The Gents & Lairs first connected in 2015 through a desire to play songs straight from their hearts and pens, and reemerged in 2021 with the addition of keys, killer harmonies, and a renewed sense of purpose and determination to deliver an elevated live music experience. The result is a slick original sound paired with a vintage vibe that sends a nostalgic kickdrum straight to listeners’ hearts.

Lead singer Sean McCurry and lead guitarist Tony Mowell go way back, forming their musical bonds while melting hearts with guitar riffs in high school. Bassist David Mowell and drummer Craig Kestner build the groove foundation, while Chris Ward adds a swath of color to the rhythm section. Jimmy Dale is responsible for that big, dynamic sound on the keys that makes G&L stand out.

“Just Like the Old Days,” the latest EP from the Gents & Liars features seven original tracks showcase songwriting talent and musicianship grown in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee. Crowds have quickly connected with “Rescue Me” that explores the vulnerability of addiction, as well as the song “Old Flame” and its nostalgic notion of rekindling past love.

Sean generates the energy that G&L uses to construct a one-of-a-kind live show highlighted with three-part harmonies from brothers Tony and David as heard on “Let You Down” and “Devious Woman.” Their tribute to home, “Hey Hey Tennessee,” brings listeners to their feet, while “Country and Rock n’ Roll” captures the heart and soul of their musical influences.

The Gents & Liars deliver a high-energy live performance of authentic outlaw country elevated by three-part harmonies, first-class musicianship and a fresh take on covers of artists that inspire these groove engineers to create special blend of both new and familiar.

“You guys stay true to your outlaw country sound but at the same time, your songs have all the sophistication and intricacy of a Broadway musical. Nothing is ignored and your songs take the listener out of the ditch into the clouds and then right back into the ditch. By the end of your song "Rescue Me" (an instant classic) I felt like I had just run a mile.” - Brett Winston, Scruffy City Music Hall.
