Biographie de Pavlov's Bell
Pavlov's Bell is a means to study sound & rhythm. The project was created out of a desire for experimentation that challenges the expectation of what music can be. Though the group formally identifies as a trio; the band's "traditional" functions become amorphous in its compositions.
Their sophomore release MALA NOTA is a conceptual, long-form piece of music divided in ten pieces. The album's framing device has us explore the collective psyche of 10 diverse people accompanied by densely layered instrumental music that conjures feelings that are equal parts beauty and malice. Ghastly yet melancholic. Futuristic but nostalgic.
The band brings their previously established musical vernacular of synthesized, baritone demeanor to the next logical step on this record with the aid of additional organic instrumentation; which features harp, saxophone, human voices, violin and timbres so abstract and processed that they can take the form of whatever function the particular musical moment necessitates. Mala Nota imposes a cathartic discomfort on the listener. It postulates questions we know the answers to but struggle accepting. The album asks us to take a good look at the things we ignore and to not give those things power over us.
