Description du concert
Deeply original, beautiful & transfixing solo guitar playing. All ages, doors open at 6:30, music at 7. BYOB with 21+ ID. Marisa Anderson channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her deeply original work applies elements of minimalism, electronic music, drone and 20th century classical music to compositions based on blues, jazz, gospel and country music, re-imagining the landscape of American music. The New Yorker calls Anderson ‘one of the most distinctive guitar players of her generation’, while NPR refers to her as among ‘this era’s most powerful players’ . Her work has been featured in Billboard, Rolling Stone, NPR, SPIN, Pitchfork, the BBC and The Wire. Festival appearances include Big Ears, Pitchfork Midwinter, Le Guess Who and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Her latest solo album, Still, Here, is out now on Thrill Jockey Records. Footings is sometimes a whole band, and other times just Eric Gagne, a journeyman songwriter, singer, and guitarist who has been doing things out in the world since 2003. Under this moniker Eric has released four lps on Sophomore Lounge, Don't Live Like Me, and Feeding Tube Records, toured with Bonnie Prince Billy, Rick from Pile, and the Huntress and Holder of Hands, and is currently winding down lp 5. Footings is a natural progression from Eric’s earlier folk explorations in Redwing Blackbird and Passerine. He also has made records with Dweller on the Threshold and Death to Tyrants, and has had the honor of opening for Mount Eerie, J Mascis, Diane Cluck, Waxahatchee, Califone, Dredd Foole, Steve Gunn, Mirah, Death Vessel, Leyla McCalla, Myriam Gendron, and many more. The band currently is made up of Eric on guitar / vocals, Jordan Holtz on bass / vocals, Candace Clement on guitar / keys / vocals, and Mia Govoni on drums. These shows in particular will be solo FootingslByron Coley says:"Footings is the long-running/rocking outgrowth of Peterborough NH's great ruralist duo, Redwing Blackbird. Initially formed as a trio in 2012 by Eric Gagne on guitar and vocals, Footings' sound embraces a sort of inner light derived from folk music, but surrounds it with a variety of rockist tropes. This rock action can take many forms, especially on this new album, which features their most expanded/expansive line-up yet.Gagne's songs and deep vocals, often the core of the band's operation, combine the literary qualities of a heavy reader with the observational data of a poet. In this, Footings might occasionally be mistaken for one of Will Oldham's multifarious projects. But the band has a distinct way of scrambling their eggs, and that was never clearer than it is here. Full songs are interspersed with fragmentary shards in a way that reminds me of how Michael Hurley faded out “Rat Face” after its intro, on Hi Fi Snock Uptown. I mean, “Sleeping” sounds tantalizingly close to a Neil Young penned out-take from Deja Vu for the 35 seconds it runs. But that's all there is!This outré editing process works quite well. By allowing themselves to create slivers of textural similarity to Sonic Youth (“Ordinary Night”), Crazy Horse (“Sleeping”), and even Heldon (“Wouldn't It Be Something”), Footins display wide possibilities while maintaining their primaryfocus on creating a kind of avant garde American roots music with the brash complexity of Yo La Tengo and the stately depth of Wilco. Annihilation is the best Footings record to hit the planet yet. And that is saying something."

Biographie de Marisa Anderson

Channeling the history of the guitar and stretching the boundaries of traditional genres, Portland based guitarist, composer and improviser Marisa Anderson possesses a unique and distinctive musical voice. Her playing is fluid, emotional, dexterous and original. Anderson’s second solo record, The Golden Hour (Mississippi Records 2011), features twelve improvisations inspired by Delta blues, West African guitar, vintage country and western, gospel, noise, rhythms, cycles, mortality, and praise.

Her upcoming record "Mercury", out on June 5 on Mississippi Records, mines new veins of hidden gems as Anderson shifts her focus from the Delta swamps to the high lonesome sounds of the Appalachian region before heading west to follow the trail from Nashville to Bakersfield and beyond. Songs like 'Mojave' and 'Embudo' are steeped in the sounds of the American West, while 'Galax' and 'Deep Gap' are tributes to the rural mountain music of the South. "Mercury" picks up where "The Golden Hour" leaves off, featuring sixteen compositions for solo guitar and lap steel, recorded live in single takes, with no overdubs, looping or electronic layering.

Anderson’s current and past projects include the Evolutionary Jass Band, the Dolly Ranchers, and the One Railroad Circus. She has toured throughout Europe and the US and has opened for Sharon Van Etten, Mt Eerie, The Devil Makes 3, and Thao & Mirah. Anderson has collaborated with musicians including Beth Ditto, Mirah, Tara Jane O’Neil, Sarah Dougher, Lori Goldston, Rachel Blumberg, and many others.

Anderson’s music has been featured on soundtracks including ‘Smokin’ Fish’, ‘For the Love of Dolly’, ‘Girls Rock’, and ‘Gift To Winter’. Recent festival appearances include Le Guess Who, Creative Music Guild Improvisation Summit, Portland Experimental Film Festival, Sound & Music Festival, NOFest, Electrogals, Festival of Endless Gratitude, Pickathon, and PICA’s TBA Festival. Her writings on music and activism have appeared in Bitch Magazine, Leaf Litter, and in Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls, the book. In 2012 Anderson was one of six artists selected for Signal Fire’s Afloat Residency. Anderson’s debut solo recording ‘Holiday Motel’ was a 2006 Outmusic nominee for Best Female Debut Recording.

Anderson spent 2003-2011 working at the Rock'n'Roll Camp for Girls. Before arriving in Portland in 1999, Marisa walked across the US, toured with Circo De Manos through southern Mexico, was a founding member of the Chaos Collective and helped create the One Railroad Circus in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
