Biographie de Sofia Rei

Argentine vocalist, composer and producer Sofia Rei combines in her music stylistic codes drawn from multiple sources, ranging from South American folkloric styles to jazz, pop, new classical music and electronic sounds. Sofia started her career as a member of the Colón Theater Children’s Choir at age 9. She studied classical music at the National Conservatory in Buenos Aires with Professor Marta Blanco and was a member of the National Youth Choir. She also worked in the avant-garde vocal scene, often premiering works by young adventurous Argentine composers. In 2001, she moved to Boston to study jazz and improvised music at the New England Conservatory, (Boston, MA) where she received her Master’s Degree.  Since moving to New York in 2005, she has released three critically acclaimed albums as a leader, two of which have earned an Independent Music Award for Best Album. Her stylistic versatility is illustrated in the array of artists she has worked with, such as John Zorn (Mycale and the Song Project), Bobby McFerrin, Maria Schneider, Mark Ribot, Myra Melford. the Klezmatics, Pedrito Martinez, Susana Baca, Lionel Loueke and Geoffrey Keezer with whom she earned a Grammy Nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album of 2009. Rei has also been an advocate of South American culture through her work. She is a co-founder of El Colectivo Sur, an arts collective based in New York City and curates its flagship program, the NYC South American Music Festival. She currently works with Berklee College of Music’s Global Initiatives in various programs including its itinerant project Berklee Latino. Her music has taken her all around the world to venues and festivals including Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center,  Weiner Konzerhaus, Montreal Jazz Festival, Cité de la Musique, Festival Iberoamericano de las Artes de Puerto Rico, North Sea Jazz, and Teatro Degollado in México. She continues to set herself apart with a bold new vision in the global music scene.
