I've never been to a concert before, so I was absolutely thrilled to be at Alex G's as my first, especially in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.
I had no idea how lines worked, so I was there 3 hours earlier. Ended up being the earliest there, so I made small talk with a nearby guard who said: "This Alex G guy seems like some loud American stuff!" Then, I grabbed ramen nearby to burn time.
Eventually, people started pouring in. I struck up a conversation with a fellow Australian, then, a traveler from Singapore. We congregated as the firsts infront of the gate's opening to the arena. The concert holders started shouting out ticket numbers to let us in. My ticket didn't have a number, so I was sort of waiting for about 20 minutes until the guy shouting numbers (who must have seen how damn desperate-looking I was) beckoned me in. I shouted for my buddies in the line to come up, and we rushed in. I bought a Miracles tote bag and got a free poster.
There were $6 drinks that I splurged on knowing how sweaty I'd get. And I did get sweaty, because it was a tight venue - shoulder-to-shoulder, and I was at the third row to the stage.
Soft music came on, applause rolled in, and out came a guy tuning the guitars. I was convinced it was Alex G himself, but it was just some Japanese staff when I looked closer under the light. You could tell it was Alex G when there God Save the Animal's album cover illuminated the backdrop of the stage platform. Also, everyone really started screaming. Me too though! It was funny, because everyone around me was Japanese, so I heard a lot of garble-English in thick Japanese accents.
He started off with Runner, obviously.
Then, it was a bunch of other songs from the album: S.D.O.S, After All. Miracles stood out to me most. When it was Blessing, Alex G picked up his small cup of beer and started parading around the stage with the contents of his cup almost teetering out of the rim, but not once did it ever spill. He's just magic. Great first concert
