Sampology is a DJ, producer and visual artist from Meanjin. Over 15+ years, he’s been a key player in the rise of Australia’s burgeoning electronic and soul/jazz adjacent scenes.

In his early career, Sam made his mark performing throughout Australia, South Asia, Europe and USA.

After proving himself overseas, Sam reconnected with Brisbane’s musical community and focused on his growth as a producer and composer. He’s shared a string of EP & Album releases through his Middle Name Records imprint. The lush and soulful textures of Sampology’s music are accompanied by imagery of the natural world.


In 2016, the producer received praise for his EP, Natural Selections (released via Australian label Soul Has No Tempo) gaining the Gilles Peterson nod of approval with a Worldwide Premier for single Thicker Than Water, in addition to a Boiler Room Debut for the title track Natural Selections. The family and friends effort (the release features a number of Brisbane local musicians as well as family members collaborating from string compositions to cover art!) has been his most personal work to date, showcasing his talents as a musician in his own right.

Picking up where Natural Selections left off, the relentlessly innovative Brisbane native has continued to evolve as an artist and performer, with an exciting follow up release on the horizon. The forthcoming 6-track EP – which is set to drop in July 2018 – features renowned special guests, but the real highlight lies within the production, with Sampology peeling back the layers of his musical palette and influences. Delving deeper into the broken beat & percussive house rhythms he is known for, Sampology has masterfully incorporated more live and sampled instrumentation, string arrangements and drum-machine driven beats with unmistakable jazz undertones. The result is a vibrant and colourful body of work that draw from nostalgic textures and ambient, Balearic influences. First up is the stunning title track Mt Glorious, rich in its layers of drums, grand piano, synth, vibraphone, the lush strings from all female quartet Meraki and a hint of Hannah Macklin's beautiful vocals. Mt Glorious is just at home at sunrise or sunset as it is in the middle of the night on a very special dancefloor.

Starting off his career as a producer with an ear for sampling records, Sampology has come full circle, finding the perfect balance sampling new sounds, field recordings and live instrumentation. Whether played by himself or his peers that he’s invited into his home studio to collaborate, the method has been central to Sampology’s evolution as an artist and purveyor of new music and emerging local talent.
