A propos de 23 Skidoo

23 skidoo are possibly one of the only bands in history to have crossed industrial, punk, hip hop, funk, jazz and tribal elements, and to have done it fairly seamlessly.

Formed in 1979 by Fritz Catlin, and brothers Johnny and Alex Turnbull, 23 Skidoo had interests in martial arts, Burundi and Kodo drumming, Fela Kuti, The Last Poets, William S. Burroughs, as well as the emerging confluence of industrial, post-punk and funk, heard in artists such as A Certain Ratio, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, The Pop Group and This Heat.

Jhonn Balance of Coil was briefly a member, and they produced a record with David Tibet of Current 93.

The band seemed to have disappeared in the late 80's/90's when they focused on behind-the-scenes production work and their own record label Ronin. In 2000 they released a self-titled album featuring jazz legend Pharaoh Sanders on sax. The group disbanded in 2003.

Much of their output has been sampled on other people's records, most notably "Coup", sampled by The Chemical Brothers on "Block Rockin' Beats". The bassline of "Fire" was used by Meat Beat Manifesto on the track "Radio Babylon" which singlehandedly kickstarted the jungle and drum and bass genres.
