A propos de Minus the Bear

Minus the Bear
The Seattle quintet Minus the Bear formed shortly after the turn of the millennium, fusing the previous decade’s forward-thinking math rock guitar gymnastics with the new century’s poptimistic pulse, indie sleaze revelry, and technological adventurism. Across the span of eighteen years, six full-lengths, and an array of singles and EP, the band traversed a broad swathe of sonic territories, seamlessly jumping from brainy indie pop to glitchy dance-punk to ambitious prog rock, all while retaining their signature blend of celebratory swagger with a pensive and reflective patina. Fueled by guitarist David Knudson’s fingertapping dexterity and pedalboard wizardy, vocalist/guitarist Jake Snider’s wistful and poignant depictions of adulthood escapades, multi-instrumentalist Alex Rose’s lush synth layers, and bassist Cory Murchy’s nimble groove, Minus the Bear created a body of work that cemented their place as one of modern indie rock’s most distinctive and influential acts.
Though Minus the Bear toured extensively across Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia, they were mainly known as an absolute juggernaut on the North American circuit, where they routinely sold-out theaters from coast to coast. Their final US tour was documented on the posthumously released live album Farewell, which captured not only the fiery and flawless execution of their most beloved material, but also the fervent enthusiasm of their devoted fanbase.

The Sovereign is at a newer venue, so I was a bit unsure of what to expect. It was excellent! Despite the crowd, there was ample floor space and I was kinda fascinated by absolutely frigid the HVAC could get on a 99 degree humid STL day.
Minus the Bear, it goes without saying almost, were amazing. It’s great to watch a band perform who are clearly doing it on their time, by their rules, and because they want to. Smiles all around from those guys. The opening band, Keep from Richmond VA were of your standard shoegaze revival band. Drummer/vocalist seemed to be having an off night.

Amazing show and experience. Doing VIP in such an intimate setting was awesome, and the show was high-energy and sounded amazing. These guys are just as good or better than they were 15 years ago.
KEEP was the opener. Lots of sound problems, the ride/crash cymbal was ear-piercing and it and the drums in general overpowered the entire sound, the mic was in and out. Basically was waiting for them to end after 5-10 minutes.

Had a great time seeing these guys back on stage again. It's always a treat to watch Dave on guitar. He's one of the most personable musicians out there. Pure talent & a heart of gold. Their sound as a whole, however, has me hooked for life. Glad I was able to be there!
