In the spring of 2010, friends Sun Kim and Moshe Pytel made the decision to start a band together. With Sun on guitar and Moshe covering duties for drums and bass, they decided to get a third member. After trying out a few people, bassist/drummer Kirk Harbaugh was brought on to split time on both instruments with Moshe. They played one show with this configuration under the name Turtle Genocide. Shortly after the first show, it was decided that Moshe would play drums exclusively and the band would go without a bassist as Kirk switched to second guitar. With this lineup, the band decided a name change was in order, and Thread the Sky was born. Over the next two years, the band would play a few parties, record some demos, and develop their sound. Ranging from intricate dual tapping guitars a la Minus the Bear, to uptempo dance rock, and heavy breakdowns, a unique sound was born. In March of 2012, due to unexpected circumstance, Sun Kim left the band on good terms. During the next 9 months, Kirk and Moshe would jam regularly writing new material and adapting old material to a new more progressive direction. Various third musicians were tried out during that time. Kirk would also spend a brief period of time as a drummer for Mosquito Valentine Trio, a band he played in from 2007-2009, once again. In 2013 Thread the Sky would find their new second guitarist in Vinny Arora. With the addition of Vinny came a new style that incorporated more heavy metal elements with more focus on technical playing. With a second guitarist once more, the band would spend about a year working on new material and gaining chemistry between the trio. On February 13th, 2014, the trio would play Thread the Sky's first show since October 2011. The band would play a few more shows in the coming months while also recording the demos for Crystal, Or Whatever Your Name Is and There and Back Again. In July 2014 the decision to add a bassist to the mix was made. After holding tryouts with several different bassists, the band decided Knotch Toews was the man for the job. Unfortunately, the band would remain a quartet for only 2 months, as Vinny left the band during September due to personal reasons. At this point, the remaining members had to made a decision, add a second guitarist or continue as a trio once more. After much deliberation, the band decided on remaining a trio and plugging onward. After several months of writing with the new lineup, it was decided 2015 would be a big year for TTS, and it was. In 2015 TTS would exand their fanbase by playing more, bigger shows opening for nationals acts likes of Insomium, Maid Myriad, Sirens, and The Fine Constant. As well as the national acts, TTS would play several shows with acts local to Seattle like Grand Arson, A Crime of Passion, Rhine, and their close friends Tides of Malice. Off the stage, Thread the Sky would release their first EP, Glaciers, on June 12th. The band would also release their first shirt, a design by close friend Sam Gill influenced by song name Man-Eating Tiger. In 2016, expect Thread the Sky added second guitarist Joshua Brown. The band moved to a new, more permanent space for rehearsal and started building their own recording studio. Thread the Sky also played their first show at Studio 7, opening for Seattle based national touring act Ghost Ship Octavius. 2017 has seen Thread the Sky finish tracking for the second EP "Pathways" to be released in the beginning of Summer. The EP will be led with single "There and Back Again", a long time fan favorite. Thread the Sky is an instrumental band from Seattle, WA. We blend sounds of heavy metal, progressive rock, jazz and funk to create a high energy sound.
