Biography Caleb Gauwitz “Substance D” I was born in Austin, Texas and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2000. I first got interested in music at the age of ten when I took violin lessons for three years in middle school. This experience gave me a basic appreciation of music and knowledge of musical structure, harmony and counting—all of which I learned by ear. I played in orchestra concerts, which increased my musical knowledge during those three years. But it wasn't until after graduating from high school, while taking part in the club scene, that I became fascinated with DeeJays. I wanted to learn how they manipulated music produced by others to turn it into entertainment for the people. I was amazed at the impact DeeJays had on the audiences with their “turntableism”. My next step was to take what I learned in my teenage years and apply it to becoming a DeeJay. I learned the basic required skills from a professional named DJ Ghost, and I got to learn everything there was to learn about the 1s and 2s, starting from the ground up. Back in 2010, I became committed to becoming a professional DeeJay. I wanted to play in front of live audiences nationwide, turning the people on to my style of music and “turntableism” skills. Next I learned the trade by doing, and a year later, I started playing at local Colorado clubs and other venues around the state. I first competed in DeeJay Battles, showcasing my wares to enthusiastic audiences for prizes and opportunities. I then got involved in marketing and promoting with the locals as well as evaluating new talent at numerous venues. My goal is to spread my wings outside Colorado and develop my skills as a musical entrepreneur.
