Lanugo is a unique and well established music formation on the Czech music scene. The band released an eponymous debut in 2009 with the prestigious jazz label Animal Music, even though jazz is rather a seasoning for otherwise pop, rock and electro based music. In November 2011 the group has released its long awaited second album LANUGO, 2011 in its own production. Music produced by Lanugo is respected and appraised by prominent Czech critics. The group tends to be labeled as a multi-genre formation balancing at the edge of acoustic and electronic space with its notoriously intimate atmosphere. The live performances offer a ravishing experience, mostly thanks to the outstanding professionality of young musicians. The group has been nominated for the Apollo prize for its album LANUGO, 2011. The Belgian formation Hooverphonic chose it as a partner for its Prague concert, May 2012. The record was created in the course of three years, recorded and mixed in Sono Studio and a cozy Studio Spálená owned by the Lanugo guitarist Mirek Šmilauer. First four tracks were released by the band as EP at the beginning of last year, the rest was finalized with the help of its fans, when Lanugo collected the needed funds through HitHit platform. The concept of the record is the result of the progressive graphic designer duo Ex Lovers, with whom Lanugo worked also at its previous album. For some of us it may be at least a bit of a surprise. The producer Viliam Béreš adds: “This record is a kind of tiny monument to the disc era. Even if you feel that you are holding just another of endless row of CDs, soon you find out that you have been dragged into a strange game at which end our music is awaiting you. In a sound quality never reachable through CD format. Since the moment of its creation, CDs were forcing musicians to acoustically castrate their work. Everything in us and around us is in motion and the musical world is no exception in this process. We decided to draw attention to this phenomenon and provoke discussion. We wanted our fans to free themselves from tradition for a little while and played this game with us. We like the fact that the auditor has to do something extra in this case, to actively participate to actually get to the content. We sort of enjoy this game and hope you will, too.” The album release party takes place at Prague’s Podnik on 25. 9., a new club opened in the place of former Electrical company site, Bubenská 1, Praha 7 constructed in functionalistic style.
