Jim Messina carefully crafted an evening of musical exploration that included recognizable favorites that invited us all to sing along, and added instrumental works that showcased the talents of all the musicians in the band. Jim’s voice was warm and true, and his guitar playing was impeccable. I had no idea what I was going to be experiencing when I stepped into the venue (also a big part of why it was so special), and I left feeling like I had been on an adventure. Sooo good. Won’t forget it.

I waited for Jim Messina and Road Runners on November 25, since August. It was a rainy night in darkened Annapolis dressed up in tinsel, but the glow from the Ram’s Head Tavern was welcoming, leading into the night club ambience and intimate seating. I was rewarded with an unobstructed seat on a raised dais, a killer view of the entire band, a sound that filled the space beautifully, and made who have the same music sensibilities in common – loving the music.
The set list was put together the same way Jimmy would arrange, adapt, score and instrument an individual song likening it to a movie storyline, script with lyrics as dialogue and characters enhanced by their individual talents while he, the director, encouraged their interpretation with his ubiquitous musical integration. Beautifully opened with Thinking of You from the L&M 1972 album, he gave us what we wanted – a time travel moment to an era of musicianship, exploration leading to expectations that did not disappoint.
Stellar performances by band members came together in harmonic recreation of back in the day –horns, reeds, percussion, B3 sounds, Telecaster started off with slow burns, bringing it to its high peak, finale and denouement. Like a wine experience exploding tastes and flavors with a fine finish. Oh, those lovely finishing notes! When Jimmy switched to mandolin, I knew the song Be Free would be incredibly satisfying just as it had in 1976 on the Capitol Theatre stage, Passaic, NJ.
After the show, Jimmy graciously came out for a conversation with the audience. He appreciated questions and responded how he meant to hearken the days of small theater interaction between audience and artistry allowing what the audience thirsted for – notes and arrangements that took us back to our innocence (House on Pooh Corner) and life roads taken (Watching the River Run). Jimmy loves his audience. We love him back. C.A. Kotlar Turchyn

Jim Messina and the Roadrunners put on an awesome concert. The Nashua Center for the Arts set the stage for an intimate show. Their music was lovely and Jim Messina's guitar skills and voice were impressive! I had forgotten just how talented he was.
We enjoyed the first set over the second, mostly because they played 'House At Pooh Corner', 'Danny's Song' & 'Your Mama Don't Dance'.
All the bandmembers were very tight and cohesive. That says a lot considering how intricate some of their songs are. Each one of the Roadrunners and ALL their instruments were spotlighted throughout the night.
Overall they are a talented, light-hearted group of musicians that still have lot of fun on stage, and that definitely transfered to the audience. So thank you for taking us back to the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh.♡

This was a very energetic and well-paced show. Jim Messina still has a good voice, and the set he performed was a great selection of his very memorable songs. The arrangements were very reminiscent of the original album versions, and the backup musicians were exceptionally talented. A real treat.

The music was wonderful. The band did a good job. The narrative from Jim Messina was uninspired. We sure wanted some stories from the road. It was entertaining, but more as a TV special for 2 or 3 songs.
I just loved Loggind and Messina. Wanted a nostalgic insight. Go on happy ministerial.

The concert was excellent! I was amazed that he would come to our small town. I have been to many concerts, but never has the artist come out to talk to the audience after the conclusion of the concert. What a great experience! He still sounds great both his voice and his guitar playing! Thank you to Jim for an unforgettable evening!

Jimmy Messina show at the Savannah in The Villages was fabulous. Very low key, could understand every word they sang. His band,m The Road Runners were equally as good. His one band mate played bout 8 different instruments. The sax was great. After the show Jimmy came out to a real question and answer forum. Very calm atmosphere and he answered all questions or comments. He needs to come back with Kenny Loggins and have a real jam session.

Well played! Western, rhythmic, jazz, country and funky. All of the pop tunes were fine but the real show was in the improv and solos embedded into jams like “Angry Eyes” and the rhythms that took me to the islands. Vocals and harmonies gelled very well.

The only disappointing thing about the show was the was the small amount of people that showed up for it. I thought him and his band were outstanding and so tight and together with their performance. I highly recommend seeing them if you get the opportunity.
Truly an outstanding troubadour ! The percussionist was phenomenal and masterful in so many instruments. I will certainly try to see them next time I get the opportunity!

Great concert. Jim Messina was great and his band was awesome too. I figured it was going to be good but this concert way exceeded our expectations. Fantastic setlist and songs were done very professionally. Sound in the theatre was perfect. Not too loud and very clear. No booking bass guitar that overwhelmed to rest of the band. Musicians have obviously been playing together for a while. The Douglas Auditorium was a perfect venue. Just the right size. Parking was limited so you had to park on side streets unless you get there really early. No big deal though. Only had to walk a block or two. We will go back to the Douglas Auditorium for more shows. Did not even know this venue existed. Looking forward to going back in the future.

So one of the epic icons of the 1970s rock era comes to the intimate Soiled Dove Underground, fifty years after he and Kenny Loggins rocked out to sold out arenas. What did we expect? Exactly what he delivered. A great collection of incredible songs played with the best blend of studio talent, led by a genius songwriter and top of the world performers! Way to go, Soiled Dove, and way to go Jim Messina!

Outstanding, great back up band. Steve Nieves is incredible and is a one man band. Jim is so personal and talented, what a career he’s had. I’m so glad he’s out doing solo concerts. Always been a fan of his but had never seen him perform without Kenny. The end of the show was the best part though. He’s not doing meet and greets anymore because the Covid bug bit him twice. But he came out after the show, sat on the stage and took questions. God bless him for being that brave to field questions from the audience who stayed and being interested enough in the audience to do this. It was the most intimate concert I’ve ever been to. Thanks Jim!

Jim Messina: 10/12/22 “Tonight was my first time seeing either Loggins or Messina LIVE and there may not have been a more suitable venue than Peace Center’s Gunter Theatre with an intimate seating capacity of 439. The theater a quarter sized replica of the main concert hall comes complete with the same superb acoustics —there wasn’t a word or note one couldn’t make out. Securing my 3rd row seats the first day of sale I guaranteed a close up view of the half-duo’s performance. It was Jim’s first date of a nineteen date tour so there was no setlist adding to the element of surprise. Jim’s guitar (beginning at the age of five) and vocals haven’t diminished a bit despite a run-in with Covid causing him to postpone an earlier scheduled reunion performance this year with Kenny Loggins at the Hollywood Bowl. The stage set up (stage L to R) consisted of: bass, drums, Messina’s mic in front center, a percussion and horns combo, keys. Jim took the stage precisely at 7:30 for a 2 hour (including an intermission) / 15 song set. ‘We’re going to do some songs you know, and hopefully I do’, Jim’s opening remark clearly identified himself on the same level as the well seasoned crowd. The setlist was 20 million seller Loggins and Messina heavy with a total of 11 of the duo songs! Jim 74 and entirely accomplished prior to his L&M days dipped into his Buffalo Springfield years for ‘Kind Woman’, and back to Poco for ‘You Better Think Twice’ and ‘Follow Your Dreams’ dedicated to Rusty Young. ‘Poo Corner’ and ‘Danny’s Song’ were early set favorites, songs two and three respectively. Messina exhibited multiple guitar playing styles, fingerpicking, jazz runs, and classic country riffs trading out acoustics for electrics and back again all evening long. On ’74’s Be Free’ he played mandolin. Regarding his on stage playing, Jim referred to it as merely a practicing opportunity for future projects. Aside from his musical abilities, Jim showed himself a story teller introducing most songs with applicable background story lines. Multiple times he referred to himself as only fifty-nine years of age, each time bringing smiles and a round of laughter from the audience. His hand picked band were simply an amazing conglomerate of individuals. Prior to the show the woman running the merch table told me how amazing the band compiled in Nashville was, ‘You have to hear them play to believe it’. Steve Nieves on the music scene since ’84 played both soprano and alto sax, flute, and in addition every hand percussion instrument imaginable. There were congas, hand whistles, a recorder, triangle, tambourine, shakers, and a number of things I honestly don’t know the names of. Sax solos on two of the songs found him crouching down with his horn belting out in the faces of audience members as he strutted up and down the front edge of the stage. Of note also was Jack Bruno on drums who had been in Joe Cocker’s band and has toured with greats such as Tina Turner. Ending the regular set with an extended rendition of 1972’s ‘Angry Eyes’ the band showcased each member’s musicianship with superbly done individual solos. The encore followed with ‘You Need A Man’ and ‘Your Mama Don’t Dance’, and yes a number of us grandmama’s and grandaddy’s danced and rock ’n rolled along. For the folks who would normally stick around in hopes of a meet and greet at the merch area, Jim invited them for an audience/performer Q&A in the theater calling the 100 or so of us all the way up front. For the next 40 minutes seated on stage he answered every question asked, some personal, some specific to tours, instruments, albums, individuals, and bands he played in. All the while you could hear the band and crew in pack up and roll out mode getting ready for the next evening’s show in Winston-Salem. It was something amazing I had never experienced before. Folks these early 70’s songs are timeless and worthy of experiencing LIVE should your town appear somewhere on Jim’s list of upcoming performances!” Review and photo by DAve. (Concert # 712)

Jim and his stringed array were superb from acoustic to electric to the mandolin on Be Free. Jim dedicated Kind Woman to his friend, Rusty Young.
The band was exceptional in their performances of songs from Jim's catelog.
After the show, Jim came out for a Q&A and was very candid about his life's work.
