Above the Arctic Circle during Norway’s season of darkness (“mørketiden”), a chance encounter between an American and a Norwegian spawned a transatlantic duo called The Familiar. Working together almost exclusively via email and texts, the duo of native New Yorker Ruth Mirsky and Tromsø-born producer Mads Martinsen is the northern lights meeting the skyscrapers of New York. Their sound, hailed as “seductive synthpop" by The Guardian, has evolved over the past few years with 2 independently released EPs, numerous syncs including an HP/Virgin Racing commercial and the trailer theme music for the TV show "Unge Lovende" (NRK, Norway), as well as several music videos.
The Familiar is working on a new album and live show for 2020.
