Piero

Piero de Benedictis, known professionally as Piero, was an Italian-born Argentine singer-songwriter whose music combined folk, Latin pop and socially conscious songwriting. Born in Gallipoli, Italy, in 1945, he moved to Argentina with his family at the age of three and began his professional singing career in 1964.

His breakthrough came with “Mi viejo” in 1969, written with his longtime collaborator, lyricist José Tcherkaski. His repertoire also included “Pedro Nadie,” “Llegando, llegaste” and “Para el pueblo lo que es del pueblo,” with songs exploring family, love, peace and social justice.

Piero recorded and performed across Latin America for more than six decades. In 2016, the Latin Recording Academy honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award. He died in Buenos Aires on October 7, 2026, aged 81.
