Between The Trees crowned Best UK Micro-Festival 2025 – but what makes it so special?
Small yet perfectly formed and brimming with wild imagination, Between The Trees is a four-day nature-themed indie-folk festival set in a Welsh woodland by the sea, blending an immersive forest setting with thought-provoking talks, debates and hands-on workshops in nature and conservation.
Between The Trees Festival will return this August bank holiday from 27–30 August 2026, inviting festivalgoers to step into a 100-acre enchanted woodland for four days of live music, creativity and reconnection with nature. Set in Candleston Woods on the South Wales coast, the award-winning event, has been recognised for its intimate atmosphere, strong sense of community and its distinctive blend of music, nature and meaningful conversation.
Offering a refreshing alternative to large-scale festivals, Between The Trees brings together more than 50 original indie-folk acts from across the UK, Europe and the United States, including Seafret, Skerryvore, Valtos, Elias Alexander and Rusty Shackle. Alongside the music, a curated programme of talks and debates features leading voices in eco-science, sustainability and conservation, including broadcaster and naturalist Iolo Williams and writer and presenter Robin Ince, giving audiences the opportunity to engage with urgent environmental issues in an accessible and inspiring setting.
The festival’s immersive approach extends beyond the stage, with a dedicated Eco-Hub—part-funded by a regional grant from the Royal Society of Biology—inviting attendees to explore science and nature through hands-on activities. Traditional craft workshops encourage visitors to “get out of their heads and into their hands,” with sessions in willow weaving, green wood carving, ceramics and foraging suitable for all ages.
Wellness is also central to the Between The Trees experience, with a wide range of sessions set among the woodland surroundings, including yoga, meditation, forest bathing, tai chi, massage and sound therapy, most of which are included within the ticket. The festival’s thematic focus, “The Elements,” inspires a programme that explores folklore, ancient practices and the natural world, including insights into Welsh mythology and the mystic realm of Annwfn.
Food and drink are an integral part of the weekend, with a selection of award-winning local vendors, a dedicated real ale bar offering craft beers and ciders, and a range of distinctive cocktail options. The event also caters to families and younger audiences, with children’s adventures, puppetry, natural play zones, Forest School experiences and dance workshops led by internationally renowned Ballet Cymru.
Located next to the Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve, Between The Trees offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from the pace of modern life. With limited phone signal across the site, attendees are encouraged to unplug, unwind and fully immerse themselves in the natural environment—dancing under the trees, sleeping beneath the canopy and connecting with music, ideas and each other.
Festivalgoers are invited to make the most of the bank holiday weekend by joining what has been described as one of the UK’s most unique and soul-stirring micro-festival experiences.
