The support, Alexandra Leaving, was excellent. Giving off a Baez/Collins 'calm like bomb vibe, with hints of Michelle Shocked, that I want to hear more of. She was definitely worth the entrance money alone. The lady has pipes. And then comes Charlotte Carpenter, all gentle, vulnerable, yet brooding strength. She has a voice that falls somewhere between Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval and Margo Timmins of Cowboy Junkies fame. If you like your troubadours open-hearted yet guarded as if they know the secret of how to escape your past and build a better world in spite of it at the same time, then this woman should be your next port of call. A damn fine night out at a wonderful little bookshop that I have to visit again, Alex and Jeff are good people! Visit the shop, check out the two artists' music at the usual places online, buy their music, go see both of them when they play again, and you will not be disappointed. Dominic B.B. Salter.
